That’s it for the official preseason MotoGP test. And yesterday was a bit of a washout with only five bikes heading out on the track. The problem with building a race circuit in the desert is, as soon as the wind picks up, you’ve got a sand pit. As if the wind itself wasn’t bad enough, organisers kept having to send the sweepers out to clean the track.
Most of the teams said enough’s enough and didn’t bother sending their riders out. And the five lads that did venture out onto a sandy Losail circuit were well off the pace. In fact Danilo Petrucci was the only one to get within five seconds of Jack Millers blistering Wednesday lap.
Wednesday was by far the fastest day of the MotoGP test, and probably the only day that we can draw any conclusions from. That said, it’s still only testing. We don’t really know who was hanging the bag out for a fast lap and who was concentrating on race pace. The rookies were all learning how to ride a MotoGP bike, and a lot of the old-timers would have been concentrating on testing parts and developing their setup, rather than a bonkers lap.
We’ll have a better idea in a fortnight when the MotoGP season kicks off in earnest. Until then, here are the lap times from the final day of testing at Qatar… for what they’re worth.
